What is this?

This is a 3D printed model of the Fan Assembly module on a Jet Engine!

A jet engine is a magnificent machine that burns energy-rich liquid fuel and releases hot exhaust gas to generate an extremely powerful pushing force called thrust. The thrust pushes a plane forward and take you to your desired destinations around the world.

In all of my previous 3D printed jet engine models, the whole fan was either printed as a single piece, or as two halves then joined together. Although this approach saves a lot of manufacturing time and the fan still looks really nice, it doesn’t truly represent how a real fan was assembled. That’s why in this project, I decided to completely redesign the whole fan to make it look much better and more realistic.

How was this model designed?

This model was designed using publicly available material from the internet including CAD models, videos and pictures of the real jet engines from various aerospace companies.

The new fan assembly consists of a number of key components that you can easily identify by looking at a real jet engine:

Nose Cone – The black nose cone and the white spiral was printed all together using a dual-extrusion 3D printer
Fan Blades – Each fan blade was printed separately. Also, each fan blade has a silver leading edge and a turquoise blue body, all printed together using a dual-extrusion 3D printer
Annulus Filler – The annulus fillers provide a smooth aerodynamic profile between each fan blade into the compressors
Fan Disc – A fan disc is the central hub of a fan in a turbofan engine. Fan blades are attached to the fan disc. In operation, the fan disc must withstand the centrifugal force of the attached fan blades
Windage Shield – The windage shield provides an aerodynamic line between the Fan and the IP compressor
Fan Shaft – The fan shaft is bolted to the fan disc and allows this whole fan to spin freely on its stand
