How to Print & Assemble The AK-74M

This digital model is a 1:2 scale miniature toy and display replica intended solely for hobby, educational, engineering, and display purposes. It is not a firearm, is not designed to function as a firearm, and cannot chamber, load, or fire any real ammunition.

The STL package of this model includes an “All-In-One” Print Profile created for Bambu Lab H2 Series 3D printers. If you don’t have a H2 Series but any other printers from Bambu Lab, simply load the profile in Bambu Studio and change the printer setting to your printer. If you are new to 3D printing and never use a “All-In-One” Print Profile before, follow this instruction: How to use Bambu Studio’s All-In-One Print Profile

If you don’t have access to any Bambu Lab 3D printers. We recommend you to download Bambu Studio and load our Profile up so you can replicate the print settings that we use for each part of the model in your own slicer. We highly recommend using a 0.2mm Nozzle to print all parts of this model, except the Base – which can be printed with a 0.4mm Nozzle

Please note: The STL for each part was saved in the recommended orientation to print on FDM printers. Hence, when you load the STL in your slicer software, you don’t need to orientate them again, unless you want to try to print them in a different orientation.

Below are some tips

  • We highly recommend you to print ALL parts of this model (except the Base) fully solid. You can achieve this by significantly increasing the number of walls (rather than change the infill % to 100%) in the slicer, so that each part will be printed as solid as possible. Printing the parts solid gives the model two main advantages:
    – It makes the final model heavier, hence, it feels more solid and premium when you hold it.
    – It makes the parts stronger, especially those that have to withstand the impact when the model is used to shoot 3D printed “bullets”

  • All magnet holes can be printed without support regardless of their positions/orientations on the model. Please don’t generate support for these holes (unless you really need to). Otherwise, you may struggle to remove support inside the holes due to restricted access.

  • There is one STL in folder ‘STEP 01’ called ‘AK74M_Assembly’.
    If you load this file, you’ll see the fully assembled AKM model, and the internal components. This will help you understand where each and every part is fitted on the model.

  • This model is designed at 1:2 scale, hence, it is recommend that you print at this scale to achieve the highest quality. However, if you decide to print the model at a smaller scale, please be aware that the magnets and fasteners we selected for this model will no longer fit  and you will have to find smaller magnets and fasteners to fit, or glue the parts together.

How to assemble this model?

So now you’ve got all your parts printed? Great! Let’s assemble the model. I’ll take you through the assembly process step by step but before that, you need to purchase some items:

  • 5mm dia x 3mm thick N42 Neodymium magnets (LINK) | Qty: 18-off
  • 3mm dia x 2mm thick N42 Neodymium (LINK) | Qty: 4-off
  • 3mm dia x 10 mm L Parallel Dowel Pin (LINK) | Qty: 2-off
  • 3mm dia x 20mm L Parallel Dowel Pin (LINK) | Qty: 5-off
  • M3x6mm Countersunk Screw (LINK) | Qty: 7-off
  • M3x8mm Button Head Screw (LINK) | Qty: 3-off
  • Rubber Band (LINK) | Qty: 1-off
  • Super glue (LINK) | Qty: 1 bottle

STEP 1: ‘Dry’ assemble the model

At this step, all I want you to do is try to stack all the parts together to get a good understanding of where they are located. Because there are a lot of magnets you need to fit during the assembly process, doing this first step will give you an idea of how to fit the magnets in each part correctly. Please use the files in STEP 01 folder, and the photos below if required.

STEP 2: Assemble the Barrel and Handguards

Parts required (refer to the photos below)

  • 1x Barrel (a)
  • 1x Front Sight Block (b)
  • 1x Muzzle Brake (c)
  • 1x Cleaning Rod (d)
  • 1x Handguards (e)
  • 1x Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 20mm L) (highlighted in RED)
  • 3x Magnets (5mm dia x 3mm thick) (highlighted in RED)

Assembly process

  1. STEP 2a: Glue 1x Magnet (5mm Dia x 3mm thick) into the back of the Barrel. Then slide Front Iron Sight, Slant Muzzle Brake, and Cleaning Rod into the Barrel from front

    IMPORTANT: This magnet needs to be pushed all the way in (see pics below). The top of the magnet should sit 1.5mm below the top of the hole.

  2. STEP 2b: Glue 2x Magnets (5mm Dia x 3mm thick) into top front hole of the Handguards, and insert 1x Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 20 mm L) into the front bottom hole of the Handguard

    IMPORTANT: Please note that the outer magnet slightly protrudes out of the hole (about 1.5mm). The Dowel Pin also protrudes 4mm out of the hole

  3. STEP 2c: Assemble the Barrel and the Handguards together

STEP 3: Assemble the Receiver and Rear Sight Assembly

Parts required (refer to the photos below)

  • 1x Receiver (a)
  • 1x Rear Sight Assembly (b)
  • 1x Sub-assembly from STEP 2 (c)
  • 1x M3x6mm Countersunk Screw (d)
  • 2x M3x8mm Button Head Screw (e)
  • 1x Magnets (3mm dia x 2mm thick) (highlighted in RED)
  • 3x Magnets (5mm dia x 3mm thick) (highlighted in RED)

Assembly process

  1. STEP 3a: Glue 2x magnets (5mm dia x 3mm thick) and 1x magnet (3mm dia x 2mm thick) into their locations on the side and bottom face of the Receiver

    IMPORTANT: Please note that the magnets (5mm dia x 3mm thick) slightly protrude out of their magnet holes (about 1.5mm)

  2. STEP 3b: Install the Rear Sight Assembly to the Receiver and secure it with a M3x8mm Button Head Screw
  3. STEP 3c: Install the Sub-assembly from STEP 2 to the Receiver and secure it in place with a M3x8mm Button Head Screw. Then, secure the top half of the Handguards to the Rear Sight Assembly with a M3x6mm Countersunk Screw

STEP 4: Assemble the Bolt Carrier

Parts required (refer to the photos below)

  • 1x Bolt Carrier (a)
  • 1x Rubber Band (b)
  • 1x Sub-assembly from STEP 3 (c)
  • 1x Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 10mm L) (highlighted in RED)
  • 1x Magnet (3mm dia x 2mm thick) (highlighted in RED)

Assembly process

  1. STEP 4a: Glue 1x magnet (3mm dia x 2mm thick) into the magnet hole near the bottom end of the Bolt Carrier.

    IMPORTANT: This magnet protrudes slightly out of the hole (about 0.5mm). Please refer to the Magnet Diagram below to ensure that this magnet is installed with the correct pole orientation.

  2. STEP 4b: Insert a Rubber Band through the opening on top of the Rear Sight Assembly, and secure it in place with a Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 10mm L)
  3. STEP 4c: Slide the Bolt Carrier from the rear of the Receiver till it touches the Rear Sight Assembly. Pull the Rubber Band through the main hole of the Rear Sight Assembly, over the slot on top of the Bolt Carrier, going down and again turning towards front, then secure it firmly in the groove at bottom of the Bolt Carrier.

    IMPORTANT: You can repeat the process above to add more Rubber Bands if needed. The more Rubber Bands added, the more resistance the Bolt Carrier becomes when being pulled back

STEP 5: Assemble the Pistol Grip and Trigger Mechanism

Parts required (refer to the photos below)

  • 1x Trigger Guard (a)
  • 1x Trigger (b)
  • 1x Trigger Latch (c)
  • 1x Pistol Grip (d)
  • 1x Sub-assembly from STEP 4 (e)
  • 2x M3x6mm Countersunk Screw (f)
  • 2x Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 20mm L) (highlighted in RED)
  • 3x Magnets (5mm dia x 3mm thick) (highlighted in RED)

Assembly process

  1. STEP 5a: Glue 2x magnets (5mm dia x 3mm thick) into their locations on the top face and front face of the Trigger Guard

    IMPORTANT: These magnets need to be pushed all the way in (see pics below). The top of the magnet should sit 1.5mm below the top of the hole. In addition, please refer to the Magnet Diagram below to ensure that all magnets are installed with the correct pole orientation.

  2. STEP 5b: Install the Trigger Guard to the Receiver
  3. STEP 5c: Install the Pistol Grip to the Receiver with two M3x6mm Countersunk Screw
  4. STEP 5d: Install the Trigger to the Receiver using 1x Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 20mm L)
  5. STEP 5e: Glue 1x magnet (5mm dia x 3mm thick) into the hole at the back of the Trigger Latch, then install the Trigger Latch to the Receiver using 1x Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 20mm L)

    IMPORTANT: Please refer to the Magnet Diagram below to ensure that all magnets are installed with the correct pole orientation.

STEP 6: Assemble the Dust Cover and Fixed Stock

Parts required (refer to the photos below)

  • 1x Hinge (a)
  • 1x Swivel Joint (b)
  • 1x Stock (c)
  • 1x Butt Plate (d)
  • 1x Dust Cover (e)
  • 1x Dust Cover Release Button (f)
  • 1x Sub-assembly from STEP 5 (g)
  • 4x M3x6mm Countersunk Screw (h)
  • 1x M3x8mm Button Head Screw (i)
  • 1x Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 20mm L) (highlighted in RED)
  • 6x Magnets (5mm dia x 3mm thick) (highlighted in RED)

Assembly process

  1. STEP 6a: Glue 3x magnets (5mm dia x 3mm thick) into their locations on the top, front, and rear faces of the Hinge.

    IMPORTANT: Please note that the top magnet slightly protrudes out of the hole (about 1.5mm).

  2. STEP 6b: Slide the Hinge into the rear of the Receiver, secure it in place with two M3x6mm Countersunk Screws.

    IMPORTANT: Test the Trigger to ensure it is now functional – pull the trigger, and let go. If the trigger returns to its default position then it’s all good!. If NOT, double check if the magnets have been installed incorrectly or not

  3. STEP 6c: Glue 1x magnet (5mm dia x 3mm thick) into the magnet hole in the front of the Swivel Joint.
  4. STEP 6d: Glue 1x magnet (5mm dia x 3mm thick) into the magnet hole on the side of the Stock, then install the Butt Plate to the rear of the Stock using two M3x6mm Countersunk Screws
  5. STEP 6e: Slide the Swivel Joint into the front of the Stock, secure it in place with one M3x8mm Button Head Screw
  6. STEP 6f: Slide the Stock into the Hinge and secure it in place with one Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 20mm L)
  7. STEP 6g: Glue 1x magnet (5mm dia x 3mm thick) into the magnet hole at the bottom of the Dust Cover, then glue the Dust Cover Release Button to the back of the Dust Cover
  8. STEP 6h: Use the Cocking Handle to pull the Bolt Carrier back until it engages with the Trigger Latch
  9. STEP 6i: Slide the Dust Cover into the rear of the Receiver, then pull the trigger to release the Bolt Carrier to its default position.

    IMPORTANT: The Bolt Carrier MUST be pulled back until it engages with the Trigger Latch BEFORE the Dust Cover can be installed or removed! If this sequence isn’t followed, the Dust Cover may be damaged during the installation or removal process.

  10. STEP 6j: Test the Stock to ensure it can be fully extended/folded. Please note that the Hinge/Swivel has built-in locking mechanism to prevent the Stock from folding itself unintentionally.

STEP 7: Assemble the Magazine, Rear Sight Leaf, Safety Lever and Base

Parts required (refer to the photos below)

  • 1x Magazine (a1)
  • 1x Magazine End Plate (a2)
  • 1x Rear Sight Leaf  (b)
  • 1x Safety Lever (c)
  • 1x Base (d)
  • 2x Bullet_New (e)
  • 4x Bullet_Shell (f)
  • 1x Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 10mm L) (highlighted in RED)
  • 1x Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 20mm L) (highlighted in RED)
  • 1x Magnets (3mm dia x 2mm thick) (highlighted in RED)
  • 3x Magnets (5mm dia x 3mm thick) (highlighted in RED)

Assembly process

  1. STEP 7a: Glue 2x magnets (5mm dia x 3mm thick) into the magnet hole at the back of the Magazine. Glue the Magazine End Plate to the bottom of the Magazine, then install the Magazine into the Receiver

    IMPORTANT: The outer magnet slightly protrudes out of the hole. Please refer to the Magnet Diagram below to ensure that all magnets are installed with the correct pole orientation.

  2. STEP 7b: Install the Rear Sight Leaf into the Rear Sight Assembly and secure it with a Dowel Pin (3mm dia x 10mm L)
  3. STEP 7c: Glue 1x magnet (5mm dia x 3mm thick) and 1x magnet (3mm dia x 2mm thick) into the magnet holes in the Safety Lever.
  4. STEP 7d: Install the Safety Lever to the Receiver
  5. STEP 7e: Assemble the Base as per picture below
  6. STEP 7f: Install the AK74M to the Base

STEP 8: How to shoot 3D printed bullets with the AK-74M

This process is identical to that of the AKM - see below:

Parts required (refer to the photos below)

  • 1x Bullet_V1 (a)
  • 1x AK74M from STEP 7 (b)
  • 1x Magnet (3mm dia x 2mm thick) (highlighted in RED)

Assembly process

  1. STEP 8a: Glue 1x magnet (3mm dia x 2mm thick) into the pocket at the bottom of the Bullet_V1.

    IMPORTANT: This magnet needs to be pushed all the way in. The top of the magnet should sit 1.5mm below the top of the hole. Please also note that this bullet is NOT the same as the one used to decorate the Base in STEP 7 – those don’t have any magnet hole and won’t work if you want to shoot them.

  2. STEP 8b: Remove the Magazine from the Receiver
  3. STEP 8c: Load the Bullet into the Bolt Carrier from underneath the Receiver (through the Magazine slot)
  4. STEP 8d: Reinstall the Magazine to the Receiver
  5. STEP 8e: Push the Safety Lever down
  6. STEP 8f: Pull the Bolt Carrier back using the Cocking Handle until it engages with the Trigger Latch
  7. STEP 8g: Pull the Trigger to release the Bolt Carrier. As the Bolt Carrier moves forward, the bullet will be launched through the barrel.
